Well, now what?
Fucked if I know, folks.
Not the answer you're looking for, I know, but it's the truth.
I could go over all the fucked up stuff that's happened since my last post, but there's little point. Plenty of people have already done that and continue to do so. If you're looking for a short list of sources that did go all-in on the jagoffs-in-chief, here are the ones that parts of me are monitoring (with RSS feed links):
- What the fuck just happened today? (ATOM)
- The Index (RSS)
- Mueller, She Wrote (RSS)
- Ken Klippenstein (RSS)
- 404 Media (RSS)
- Abortion, Every Day (RSS)
- Paul Krugman (RSS)
- Erin In the Morning (RSS)
- The Nerd Reich (RSS)
- Amy Siskind (RSS)
The feeds for all of those sites are monitored daily by my Huginn install; if that's not how you roll consider throwing one or more of them into your RSS feed reader of choice.
However - and this is a biggie - for the love of pete if you have to not pay attention for a while for the sake of your mental health, please don't. There are plenty of folks out there who're keeping on top of things and you can take a break for a while. If it's going to affect you directly you'll find out from the folks you know. Not paying attention or knowing ahead of time isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you pay too close attention you'll burn out, and burned out people can't accomplish much.
Don't count on your elected representatives to do more than put up a token resistance to anything going down. They know what side their bread is buttered on, and their biggest campaign donors won't let them forget that. We have to be there for each other.
While I'm at it, let me just say that if folks are going to pull together you're going to have to knock it off with the purity tests. Just because the Thing that somebody cares about isn't the Thing that's most important to you doesn't mean that they're not an ally, doesn't mean that they're against you, and doesn't mean that they're an infiltrator. It means they have a Thing they care about. It doesn't mean that they don't care about your Thing. There's plenty going on in the world and nobody can cover everything. You have to be able to make alliances and work in the same general direction to get anything done, because infighting wastes time and energy. Your avowed adversaries are willing and able (historically as now) to set their differences aside to work together, and that is why they've been so successful. Please understand that you are not perfect. I am not perfect. Those who would be your allies are not perfect. Perfect gets in the way of getting anything done. To put it another way, if everybody grabs a different part of the same rope but is pulling in the same direction, help them pull because they're helping you pull.
For whatever it might be worth, doing whatever you need to do for the sake of your mental health seems a good idea. This might be a good time to get some exercise in (gods know, I could stand to lose a few pounds right about now). If there are any unusual or esoteric skills that you have an interest in, it might be a good time to work on them. Maybe getting some brain exercise in will help if you have any particularly dense or weird texts sitting around waiting to be read. Or you could look up the origins of some interesting words, like "monkeywrenching" or where the name "George Hayduke" came from. To relax I've been reading some of the classics, namely The Invisibles by Grant Morrison and Warren Ellis' Global Frequency; I highly recommend them.
Take care of yourselves. Take care of your families (blood, extended, and nontraditional). And take care of each other. Because nobody else is likely to.
