The gadget shoulder holster at Thinkgeek.

Am I alone in thinking that wearing a shoulder holster designed for your techno-toys is a bad idea these days? Sure, it reduces your batman factor by redistributing the gear, but these days security guards (especially in office buildings) are much more aware of possible threats, including weapons. At a glance, one shoulder holster looks pretty much like another, and no matter what that bulge under your arm might be, a bulge under the arm is still suspect, and any police officer or security guard worth the name is going to check it out. At the very least, airport security will want to take a good look at what you've got slung under your arm.

I don’t think adding a shoulder holster really counts as reducing the batman factor. If you need to add somethign beyond the belt, it’s proof you’ve got too much hardware.

Technically it does. Functionally, it does not.

I fully agree.. at that point, maybe a backpack is the best choice for all of one’s hardware.

I’m more concerned about law enforcement – a holster is a holster, after all, and they’re going to take interest in it regardless of what you really have stored there.

I coudl understnad the massive batman factor back in 2000. BUt portable electronics have improved enough now that it’s perfectly possible to have a decent PDA, cell phone, mp3 player (did we even have those 7 years ago?), etc, all in one device. A bit heavier than a normal cell phone, but nowhere near on par with having multiple devices. Add in a leatherman and you ought to be done.

Me, I don’t even carry a leatherman. I’ve a Utilikey (http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/tools/6d98/) and I love it.

I’m less concerned about the holster, turthfully. When passing through a metal detector, you’ll have to empty the thing out anyway – and na empty holster isn’t per se a cause for concern. Granted a security guard may hassle you for wearing an odd accessory – but they’ll hassle you if they feel like it anyway.
