It's not just (going to) a job, it's an adventure.

The good news is that Lyssa is all right; as I alluded to yesterday, she's been in a considerable amount of pain over the past couple of days. Rialian was nice enough to drive her to the doctor's office yesterday afternoon and it's been determined that she might have temporomandibular joint dysfunction. We're working on getting her to a dentist who specialises in such things to find out for certain, and thus set a course of treatment. She now has a prescription for painkillers that can actually cut the pain caused when the trigeminal nerve, which carries a large amount of sensory data from the face, is overloaded with pain signals on a constant basis.

Hasufin and I took her to Anita's for dinner last night, because much of their food is soft enough to chew yet tasty. As it turns out, Hasufin was in a similiar situation this week, only it wasn't any of the joints in his face. He's just had two wisdom teeth extracted, you see, and he's also in a fix where soft food is advisable. We had an excellent dinner there last night, and after a quick stop off, parted ways around 2130 EST/EDT.

Lyssa slept for much of the night last night, thankfully. It's the first good rest she's gotten in a couple of days.

I realised before going to bed last night that it had begun to snow. This was somewhen around midnight local time. By the time I got up this morning at 0600 EST/EDT, the streets and ground were covered with a layer of snow, and most of the vehicles had a light coating of ice on them. This could mean one of two things: Either everyone on the roads would be travelling at one-quarter of the posted speed limit, or they'd be travelling at close to double the speed limit in an attempt to get away from the people in the former category.

As it turned out, at least where I live, it was the latter. There was one gentleman driving a red Maserati (he stands out in my neighborhood for this reason - just about everyone else has an SUV) ticking along at something like sixty miles per hour (before they'd plowed the road, let me add), and had to stop for a red light.

Thankfully, he was able to do so without misadventure, but he spent the entire time at a halt going bananas behind the wheel: Throwing his hands up, apparently shouting (or trying to make fog on the driver's side window by blowing on it, I'm not sure which), making several rude gestures in my direction (I can count to four in binary already, thank you very much), and generally looking like he'd just lost his mind.

I ignored him (lest he jump out of his car, just in case) and continued on my way. The Metro line headed towards work, however, was running about one-half hour behind due to snow and ice that had piled up on the tracks. This isn't a big deal; it's to be expected, and besides that I'm certainly not hurting for reading material to keep myself busy (thanks, Jarin!). Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Yeah; the last month or so I’d have gladly had my trigeminal nerve removed; never mind that I’d no longer be able to speak properly or stop drooling.

It amazes me sometimes how impatient some people can get. Did I tell you about the guy that tried to kill me during the week before Xmas? Didn’t have time to wait at a light, had time to – twice! – try to cause an accident.

Yeah.. he was driving like a bat out of hell; I guess he was trying to beat the stoplight by a second or so.

It was kind of funny watching him flip the hell out because he had to stop in a hurry. I’m just glad that nobody got hurt because of him. He could easily have gone into a slide.

You also would have lost a considerable amount of sensation in your face, and your sensory cortex would have gone bonkers for a while because it would suddenly be down a lot of sensory input. It is thought that the trigeminal nerve supplies something like 40% of the net input to the brain due to its points of connection.

No, you didn’t mention that. What the hell was he trying to do??

While it is one of the cranial nerves, there are 12 others. Plus the spinal cord. I don’t think it’s near as much of the input. but given the pain one gets sometimes… it almost feels like it’d be worth it. Remember, one possible cause of migraines is a malfunctioning trigeminal.

He was trying to make a left off of 7, and my car was blocking the turn lane. I was being most uncooperative in refusing to park int he trunk of the vehicle in front of me. He was honking – not the constant honk, no, rather the “beating on steering wheel” type of honk. I, perhaps unwisely, indicated my opinion of this behavior. He decided to stick his head out the window and start swearing at me. When the light did change, he roared up the turn lane – but rather than turn, he swooped in front of me and tried to cause me to rear-end him. He then tried to trap me int he intersection, but relented after 30 seconds or so. Then, at the next chance to make a left, he pulls the same manuever. He finally turned. But not after I had noted his license plate and reported him to the cops.

I’ve heard the same, and it makes a decent amount of sense some days. I’ve also heard of such migraines causing blindness because there is some weird cross-linking of nerve inputs somewhere in the brain.

What a maniac! I hope that he got picked up for that. His actions constituted a serious traffic hazard.

THat’s certainly possible. I know that in many cases there are visual effects prior to a migraine as well. I can’t even remember all 12 of the cranial nerves now. I do think we can learn a lot about neurology by how it screws up. I imagine that’s already been done, though.

Well, I reported him. Since it’s just my word against his, I assume he got a few points on his license or a warning, and that’s all. I was told they’d send an officer out to investigate him, but I’ve no knowledge beyond that.

This reminds me of something that happened a month or two (maybe three?) ago, when I was taking Duo home from a visit with you guys. It was raining out, not much but enough for the road to be a little slippery. We’re on 495, by the way, though it was really low traffic, the roads were almost empty. This one guy was speeding like a demon, easily passing us and we were already breaking the speed limit by at least ten miles an hour. Suddenly, going around a turn, there’s a cop parked on the left side of the road with his lights on, having stopped behind another car that seemed to have been in an accident of some kind. The speed-demon slams on his breaks and starts to skid. He spins out, doing a complete 360, and stops just short of hitting the cop car. He sits there stunned for like a minute before the cop waves him on… not even stopping him for a warning. Looked like the other accident was more serious and demanded the cops attention more than the speeding idiot did.

On the one hand, I’m glad to see the cop’s priorities in the right place. On the other hand, it’s irksome to see actual reckless driving go unpunished.

Holy shit.

That guy must have had Someone looking out for him – that was reckless driving and reckless endangerment, at the very least, and police tend to frown upon such things. That says nothing of the fact that it could have killed the cop….

I wonder why he didn’t get nailed for it. That’s the sort of thing where you have to take a number, you know?
