Intel is the first to market with a consumer implementation of 802.11n.

Wednesday 24 January 2007 at 08:13 am
Intel has released an implementation of the draft 802.11n wireless networking protocol for laptops and other portable devices. 802.11n has five times the maximum data throughput of 802.11g, topping out at 270 megabits per second. On top of that, their 802.11n chipset uses less power than the other wi-fi implementations out there, which can give laptops an extra hour of runtime on battery, which is a huge selling point.

Actually, they are not really the first to market. Apple has been quietly shipping laptops for several months now with Atheros AR5008 cards, which include inactive support for the draft 802.11n specification. Apple is planning to sell people a patch to unlock this capacity for $5, or free with purchase of a new airport extreme base station with 802.11n support. http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?..

Holy cats.

Wait.. sell that patch? Does this have to do with that Sarbanes-Oxley grumbling that was on the news nets not too long ago? I noted it in passing but didn’t really look into it.

That’s what they claim, yes. Some of the links in the article I linked lead to information on that. Also, the price initially reported was wrong, apparently they’re just going to sell it online for $2 instead of $5, a really nominal fee considering the feature set it unlocks.

That’s not bad at all… that’s a whole new generation of technology for pennies.

I wonder how much the price increase was on Macbooks when they switched over to the new Intel chipset.

There doesn’t seem to have been one… MacBooks currently start at $1099, which is the same price that iBook G4s started at back in 2003.

Whoa.. a truly silent hardware upgrade. I had no idea.
